Hillsong Conference 2012: More about us, less about Jesus?

Hillsong Conference 2012: More about us, less about Jesus ?
(In response to: )

Why put on a conference that points to "you and your church" instead of Jesus and His church? It has become a fad "if you will", for these pastors etc, to believe that the Church is theirs, almost as if they never had came across:

"22 And He put all things under His feet, and gave Him to be head over all things to the church, 23 which is His body, the fullness of Him who fills all in all."   - Ephesians 1:22-23

The Church (body of Christ = actual born again believers)

This conference is put on by Hillsong Church and as you can read below they believe they are helping the church:

As with everything it is important for us to test what is being said against God's word.

Let's start from the top and work our way down, starting with :

                                                                  "Why Gather?"

"There is power IN UNITY. Iron sharpens iron and together we can change the world. The power of TOGETHER is why we gather."

Let's look at this word "unity" in the context of God's Holy scriptures :

" Unity"  meaning oness   (its root word is the word for "one")

Our Lord Jesus set the standard :
Click on link below to read the whole chapter: (1)

The passage reveals that Jesus desired all believers be in unity, but this unity comes with a standard. What is the standard you may ask, well here it is :

"17 Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. 18 As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth."
                                                                                                 - John 17:17-19  (Underlining is mine)

The focus Jesus is pointing at is the Word of God, stating that "unity" of the body must be inline with the Word of God (Our plumb-line for truth). Paul in Ephesians 4:3, 13 (Chapter 4 in context) discusses unity but also warns about wrong unity in :

"8 For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), 10 finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. 11 And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them. 12 For it is shameful even to speak of those things which are done by them in secret. 13 But all things that are exposed are made manifest by the light, for whatever makes manifest is light. 14 Therefore He says:
“Awake, you who sleep,
Arise from the dead,
And Christ will give you light.”
15 See then that you walk circumspectly, not as fools but as wise, 16 redeeming the time, because the days are evil."
                                                                                                    - Ephesians 5:8-16 (Underline mine)
So we need to make sure "the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth" (v.9), and we are not to "have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them." (v.11). This helps our foundation as we continue on.

So now we have an understanding of "Unity" we have to ask ourselves: why is the power emphasized in "Unity" alone rather than "Unity" in truth by the power of the Holy Spirit?

Biblically it was the  Holy Spirit Jesus taught that would empower the early church "
"8 But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be witnesses to Me in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.”
                             - Acts 1:8

For those Biblically inclined we should be shocked to see something contrary to scripture.

Yes it's true, amongst Biblical unity in truth, iron can sharpen iron  (Proverbs 27:17).

The reason why the church "Gathers together" is for Jesus Biblically, not for the "power of together". As mentioned earlier I can't help but beg the question why Jesus is left out of the equation ? Let us not forget about the Church of Laodicea:
" 20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine with him, and he with Me. " -Revelation 4:20  Jesus was left out of Laodicea

This represents a church that left Jesus out of the picture. Let us move on to the next section.

"Why The Church?"

"The Church is God’s solution for the earth. Jesus commissioned us to be builders of the Church, and the Church to be builders of people."

In the YouTube video listed : here (2)
you can hear the words of "Steven Furtick" one of the guest speakers (More on him later in this article):  "We're gonna build God's kingdom".  This should be of great concern to any Bible reader whose read through the books of Acts:

" . . . And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved."
                                                                                              - Acts 2:47b

The Lord adds to the church, He doesn't say man does. In this age of marketing psychology, purpose driven, seeker friendly, emergent programs people are taught that it is there job to win people to the church by making things more appealing for them.  2 Timothy 4:3-4 describes the crisis at hand:

"3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables."

In understanding  Steven's quote  further "We're gonna build God's kingdom" I point you the reader to  Sarah Leslie's article "What is Dominionism?" posted by Ken Silva of Apprising : Click here (3)
This doesn't stop with Furtick alone, also the word faith preacher Joseph Prince, also scheduled to speak at this conference also has Dominionist leanings as exemplified: here (4
But it doesn't stop there, here's a video of Joyce Meyer also showing shes been part of the Dominionist bandwagon :
Once you hear Joyce reference this idea of being "militant" and how she likes to call it aggressive you should be alarmed This plays a pretty scary role in the dominionist / reconstructionist connection. (More on reconstructionist by Sarah Leslie  dealing with both reconstructionist / dominionist: click here  (5)
Not surprising host Brian Houston finds himself in the word faith camp as well. Listen to this audio from Chris Rosebrough's Fighting For The Faith Pirate Christian Radio podcast : here (6)
Brian Houston Segment towards the end of the show, played during the sermon review.

So the reader might be asking themselves "why bring all this up?" Good question, this is to help educate where they are coming from and to understand what building the church means to them. As I mentioned earlier a stark contrast from Acts 2:47b. So if one was really trying to help further the kingdom the would point these people to Jesus. Many of these teachers make the focus on you or all about themselves and seem to find Jesus nowhere in the situation.
Under the section "Why Hillsong Conference?" they make it clear the conference is focused on "you" and "your church" (Same problem as addressed as earlier, so we will move on to some of these speakers (some are mentioned above already, but we will include more on each):

Steven  Furtick:

He unfortunately was well known for his "Sun stand still prayer" and teaching. Chris Rosebrough  does a wonderful job tackling this issue: here (7)

He also claims that Exodus 3:14 (As seen in video below)
"14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” And He said, “Thus you shall say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’
that God is trying to tell us that "God, is whatever we need Him to be". This teaching is found here:

The Bible doesn't teach that God is our genie.
Here's another great article by Ken Silva : Click here (8)

It appears that even though Furtick is still getting quite a bit of limelight amongst many undiscerning churches, it is important to test what he is saying against the Word of God.Please pray for Furtick that he would repent from these teachings and pray for the people out there who are listening not to be deceived by him.

Joseph Prince:

Joseph Prince is no stranger to TBN bunch he has demonstrated that he follows in the footsteps of many other "word faith teachers" who make the focus "all about you".  Here is a great and lengthy article dealing with the teachings of Joseph Prince, by Mike Oppenheimerhere (9)

Please pray on, as the article states he mentions many Biblical truths but a little leaven will leaven the whole lump.

Joyce Meyer:

Joyce Meyer has had a longstanding history in the word of faith. Mike Oppenheimer weighs in on Joyce: here (10

Here is the teaching of her calling us "little gods":

She also believes Jesus was born-again in hell:

Please pray she will repent for such blasphemous teachings and her audience that listens to her.

Brian Houston:

Hillsong's "word faith teacher" Brian Houston (here) is usually welcomed with open arms by many Hillsong United worship fans. Ken Silva demonstrates this: here

Also brother in Christ, Erin Benziger's  of  (Do Not Be Surprised . . .) article re-posted on Ken Silva's Apprising shows an endorsement by Mark Driscoll (12): here (13)

A great and lengthy review of the Houston's can be found in this article by Neil Richardson : here
In light of so many people being a fan of Hillsong worship please pray for Hillsong, Brian Houston and those who are being mislead by them.

Louie Giglio :

With Louie Giglio we really have to ask what is going on with this guy? There are times where we hear the right things but yet he keeps bringing himself  into question more and more. I would have to categorize him with the emergent crowd the more I research him. As of recent Louie is seen participating and allowing "Lectio Divina"(15)  at his Passion Conference 2012, Ken Silva  re-post by Erin Benziger : here (16)

In the discovery of Louie & his wife heading up record label:  we quickly recognize the artist on his label. One that people are familiar with is "The David Crowder Band". Why do I bring this up? Because when you understand David Crowder's theology (I point you to an article by Pilgrim of "Defending Contending" : here  (17) ), what took place at the 2012 Passion conference should not really be a surprise. This is not simply a guilt by association, this is a band on his record label and when you see them both practicing the same thing "contemplative prayer" (click here for more) (18), we should be concerned. He has also done a conference with emergent post-modern mystic Rob Bell, (19)as shown here in "David Crowder's Fantastical church conference" : here (20)  Also found on Louie's label is Chris Tomlin and Matt Redman  (both playing at the Hillsong conference). Please pray for Louie, he is extremely influential and if he continues on in these mystical endeavors it will continual to lead people astray.

Matt Redman:

Matt Redman even though author of many great worship songs has some very concerning tie in's with "Alpha Course" through his schooling at: .
To find out more about concerns with "Alpha Course" please check out these articles:
 - (21)
(                                              (23)

He also quotes from many roman catholic mystics in his books. Please pray for Matt to abandon the emergent / alpha course connections and instead cling to God's holy word and the cross of Christ.

Chris Tomlin

Chris Tomlin also known for many notable songs, is the worship leader for Louie Giglio's church, and leads many events with Passion church. .Please pray for Chris.

(This list does not reflect every person in the conference but deals with some of the bigger names )

Now the speakers have been introduced, it should come as no surprise that the focus on "you" is emphasized more than the cross of Jesus and Him crucified.
People don't need another show or to hear more about themselves, our flesh (Ephesians 5:29) and the world do a great enough job of keeping our focus there as it is. Why not give the Gospel, preach repentance and deal with sin?  I pray and encourage you the reader to pray for those taking part in this conference to repent of there man centered message / gathering, and especially for those people that don't know whats going on behind the scenes with these individuals. Please pray these people will read their Bibles and be discerning. My heart is to warn the body and even though I'm sure many will attack me for these things being said, I encourage you to please read the following :
"17 Now I urge you, brethren, note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. 18 For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple. 19 For your obedience has become known to all. Therefore I am glad on your behalf; but I want you to be wise in what is good, and simple concerning evil. 20 And the God of peace will crush Satan under your feet shortly.
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen."    - Romans 16:17-20
