A Baptist Youth Group & "Call Me Maybe": Conforming to This World

"I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." - Romans 12:1-2

It's sadly apparent that much of the Church is being influenced/ impacted by the world in various degrees. It was supposed to be the other way around and yet many Christians do not live any different than the unbelievers in the world. The Biblical picture is that we see the disciples through the working of the Holy Spirit turning the world upside down with the Gospel (Acts 17:6). Being a fan of evangelizing/open air preaching on the L.A. Metro it is sad to see that the labors as told would be few (Matthew 9:37) and yet we pray for the Lord to bring more laborers (Matthew 9:38). Instead of us impacting the world for Jesus we see the world impacting the Church.

This brings us to a video Titled "Call Me Maybe - Summer Camp 2012" that was put together by the youth and some staff from "Colonial Heights Baptist Church" ( The video displays the youth group dancing and singing along to a secular song "Call Me Maybe" by Carly Rae Jepsen. This is very sad especially when you compare the lyrics to scripture as I have done so below the video. Here's the video:

Carly Rae Jepsen
"Call Me Maybe" Lyrics vs The Word of God:
“I threw a wish in the well, Don't ask me, I'll never tell I looked to you as it fell, And now you're in my way
I'd trade my soul for a wish, Pennies and dimes for a kiss I wasn't looking for this, But now you're in my way”

“24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. 25 For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. 26 For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? “ - Matthew -16:24-26

Christians are called to love the Lord with all their soul:
“Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’- Matthew 22:37

“Your stare was holdin', Ripped jeans, skin was showin' Hot night, wind was blowin' Where you think you're going, baby?

“15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.” - 1 John 2:15-17

“I beg, and borrow and steal Have foresight and it's real I didn't know I would feel it, But it's in my way”

“9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, 10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God. 11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.” - 1 Corinthians 6:9-11

“Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labor, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.” - Ephesians 4:28

I myself being a Youth Pastor would not tolerate this type of thing going on at a Summer camp. In fact, our Summer Camp consisted of a week going through essential Bible doctrines that every Christian should know. The second week focused on apologetics and it was very fruitful. Sadly, I've seen this taking place within some of the leadership back at a church I used to help with the youth which was encouraging secular songs about finding the perfect boyfriend, break ups, and many other distractions that have no business in a Christian retreat setting. Sergio and I both refused to play any secular songs as we were taking turns driving the youth on this trip and were encouraging that we would play worship songs or sermons for them with no problem.
It is important that we be discerning and teaching the youth to test everything against the Word of God. How else will they have a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (
Psalm 119:105) if they continue to sadly be conformed to the ways of this world? Let us pray for those in leadership and for the youth that they will not be involving themselves in these worldly songs that encourage things contrary to the Word of God.

  1. Wow (I just slapped myself on the forehead!) Sadly this is not an amazing site, but unfortunately commonplace. This is what I would say is a great example of entertaining the goats.

Although, I recently read an article that spoke about the fact that the church is not in competition with the world. How true this statement is since mostly what we see in what is called 'church' today is basically a competition with the world. A place where activities are centered on the priorities of the world (even the occult at some places) with a "splash" of "God" at the end (like this video). Sadly, this is mostly what takes place today...a definite conforming to the world, but feeling secure they are doing the work of the Lord.

I hope it helps to tell my kids everyday that they need to remember that Jesus the Messiah can quench EVERY thirst of their soul and that they were made for Him. I tell them NOT to exchange the truth for a lie, but to serve the Creator, not created things. I pray that by God's grace and mercy I can teach my kids God's word and that they will walk according to the Spirit and not their flesh or with the priorities of the world.

I do fear for these leaders, and I do pray they will wake up.

  2. This is so crazy. So appalling. It would be one thing for a bunch of immature kids doing this, but all those adults?? No wonder the kids see nothing wrong with this!

"And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being [found] blameless." -1 Timothy 3:10

It would do us well to re-read 1 Timothy when considering someone for church leadership - that includes camp leaders!!

  3. Youth groups have failed our children miserably. My stomach is nauseous. Woe to the shepherds and overseers!
